Jeep TJ Wrangler Front Disc Brakes & EBC Yellow Stuff Brake Pads. |
Car: 1997 Jeep TJ Wrangler 4.0 Sport Soft Top
Colour: Lapis Blue
The size of the oversize tyres on this Jeep Wrangler were a good excuse to do something about increasing the stopping power of the brakes. This should also help with its off-roading capabilities!
With the Jeep having disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear, a new set of EBC performance brake pads were ordered. This consisted of EBC Yellow Stuff performance pads for the front brakes, and EBC brake shoes for the rear brakes.
When the old front brake pads were removed, they were suffering a little from uneven wear. The uneven wear was being caused by the way the calipers had become worn over the years, and so with the use of welding equipment the calipers were reshaped and filed down back to normal level, to prevent this happening for some time again.
The old brake discs had been worn down unevenly by the brake pads, and also had the normal ridges at the outer edges. The brake discs were still within the required thickness, and so the discs were ground down evenly to a fresh finish for their continued usage.
The EBC performance pads have a bed-in surface, on them for initial use. The EBC Yellow Stuff pads, not only have improved braking over normal pads, but they are quieter, and also create much less brake dust.
The old brakes used to make the wheels very dirty, making them very difficult to keep clean. The wheel in the last pic was after it had had a good clean up, but now the new EBC brake pads are fitted, the wheels will get polished up again properly very soon!

The Old Brake Pads were Beginning to Suffer from Uneven Wear and this was Beginning to Effect Normal Braking!
The Brake Calipers were Getting a Grove Worn into them, which was Causing the Old Brake Pads to Work Inefficiently.
The Grove in the Calipers were Filled with Weld and Filled Down Back to an Even Level.
The Top and Bottom of Both Front Calipers had become Worn, and so all were Repaired with Weld.
The Front Brake Discs had Developed the Normal Grove Around the Inner and Outer Edges, but the Contact Surface was Now Beginning to show Uneven Wear!
The Discs were Still Thicker that the Minimum Required Thickness and so they Were Ground Down Evenly for Reuse with the Fresh New Brake Pads, rather than causing the New Brake Pads to Wear Unevenly.
This Side of the Disc was Not as Bad s the other Side, and Only Required the Edges Grinding Flat.
The Finished Disc Ready for Re-Installing.
The Front Brake Discs have Now been put Back on the Jeep together with the new EBC Yellow Stuff Pads.
The EBC Yellow Stuff Pads can be Seen in the Brake Calipers behind the 5-spoke Wheels. Now the Wheels Just Require a Polish & Hopefully should stay a Bit Cleaner now EBC performance pads are in Use.
